Best Dehumidifiers for Apartments
1. TOSOT 30 Pint Dehumidifier
If you own a larger apartment, such as a big loft style space, this dehumidifier is for you. It costs a little more that some at around $170 - but it can extract 30 pints of moisture a day and has a one gallon water bucket.
Unlike smaller dehumidifiers, you can also use a hose to drain the Tosot to a floor drain or sump pump. However, the hose is not included in the package.
This dehumidifier provides a lot of control as you can set a target humidity level to suit your comfort. The energy star rating means this is an energy-efficient dehumidifier; for instance, when it reaches the target humidity level it will switch off till it's needed again. If there's a power outage, it has auto restart and will retain all your settings so you don't need to re-enter them.
At 48 dB it's not the quietest dehumidifier on the market but it isn't loud either. We especially liked the beeping reminder to empty the water collection bucket. The LED reminder is more subtle and stays on permanently till you drain the bucket out. We also like the fact that the Tosot has a removable, washable air filter; this will help you keep the machine working efficiently.
At 20" tall it's a fairly sizable device and weighs 33 lb - thankfully it is still very easy to move around as required. There is one downside reported by a few customers; it really smells of plastic to start with. Don't worry, the smell does wear off after a while.
The TOSOT dehumidifier comes with a one year warranty and is officially the best apartment dehumidifier you can buy.
2. Ivation 13 Pint Desiccant Dehumidifier
The Ivation comes in 13 pint and 19 pint versions, which will work in up to 270 sq ft. It's priced at around $160 for the smaller unit.
If you have to cope with extreme temperatures, this is a great choice because it's a desiccant humidifier, using a different technology from most others. So it can cope with temperatures as cold as 33F and as high as 104F. It also has a really neat extra application; you can use a swinging air outlet to help dry clothes or bedding after they've been washed.
You get plenty of flexibility from the controls; you can adjust the target humidity and the fan speed. You can put it on a timer and you also have a sleep mode.
There's a half gallon tank with auto shutoff and a full tank alert, but you can also connect to a drain - the dehumidifier comes with a connection hose. However, many customers grumble that fitting the hose to the connector is difficult. The air filter is easily removable and can be washed.
At 17 1/2" high and weighing in at 11 lb, the Ivation is a compact and easily portable machine - particularly for the amount of extraction it boasts. It's also quiet and has an energy star sticker.
This Ivation model is a great alternative for the best dehumidifier for apartment.
3. Haier Energy Star 20 Pint Dehumidifier
At around $120 this is the right dehumidifier if you're on a budget with a large apartment to dry out. (There are bigger and more powerful versions of this dehumidifier available, too.) It handles 20 pints a day at maximum extraction.
The main reason it's not higher up the list is that an 8.5 pint bucket in our view really isn't big enough, and it doesn't come with a hose. It has auto-stop and an alert (both a sound alarm at the time, and a continuous blinking light) - it also has an alert when you need to clean the washable filter, which is something we've not found on other dehumidifiers.
The controls let you set your own humidity levels and set a timer. The device will automatically adjust its fan speed to clear humidity as fast as possible, by comparing the target humidity to the actual level of moisture in the air - that helps economize on energy.
It's one of the heavier machines, the 36lb, but has rolling casters to help you move it around.
If you buy the Haier, you get a 90 day return to vendor and 1 year replace/repair/refund warranty.
4. Hysure Dehumidifier
This dehumidifier is great if you have a smaller apartment, as it's meant for spaces from 160 to 270 square feet. Of course, if you had a larger apartment you could decide to buy one for each room: at around $60 that's an affordable option.
It will extract 1.5 pints a day of moisture from the environment, and at that rate, its water tank will last nearly three days before you need to drain it. If you forget, it has auto shutoff so your floor won't get soaked, and an indicator light comes on to remind you to drain the tank.
You don't want a noisy dehumidifier chugging away in your home, and we love the fact that this is one of the quietest units we found - it claims to operate below 33dB, while many other dehumidifiers work at 44dB and above. Its 40 watt rating makes it really energy efficient even if you need to operate it 24 hours a day.
It's also easily portable, weighing only 6lb, and it's a compact machine too so if you're short of space, it's easy to accommodate. Its looks are attractive, with sleek lines and small holes rather than louvers at the front - you could mistake it for a loudspeaker.
However, it has limitations. It works best at temperatures from 68F to 86F. It won't keep your apartment dry if you leave it unheated while you're away in winter. It also can't cope with extreme humidity - over 80%.
One big plus - Hysure has a good reputation for customer service, so if you do have any problems, they should be able to sort you out.
5. SEAVON Dehumidifier
Another option for the smaller apartment is this good-looking dehumidifier. The air inlets have been located at the top and back, so they don't spoil its looks, and the white sides are complemented by a transparent tank. LED lights that turn the tank into a sort of glowing lamp can be switched on in a number of different colors to suit your furnishings - or switched off, if you prefer - and there's a red flashing light to tell you when the tank is full.
This SEAVON dehumidifier is recommended for spaces up to 260 square feet and extracts up to 16 oz of water daily. The 35 oz tank lets you run it for a couple of days even at full extraction rate before needing to drain the tank, and it has auto shutoff to avoid accidents.
It's a bit noisier than the Hysure, at 36 dBA, but uses the same Peltier technology to keep operations quiet, and it's just as energy-efficient at 40 watts - less than a kilowatt a day. At 6" square by 9" tall it's easy to find space for even in a small apartment. There's a built-in handle at the back if you want to move it around your space.
Where this dehumidifier scores well are its temperature operating range; it will work as low as 41F and as high as 122F.
This dehumidifier comes with a 1 year warranty and at $46 or so, it's a good bargain too.
Benefits of Owning a Dehumidifier for Your Apartment
When you walk into your apartment, are you met by a clingy feeling of damp or a wave of hot humid air? Humidity is a real problem in many apartments, and it isn't easy to live with. As well as being unpleasant it's unhealthy - left untreated you may end up with mold or mildew problems which can set off allergies - but it's actually not too difficult to get rid of. Buy a dehumidifier and get rid of the damp.
Reducing the humidity in your apartment will help get rid of mildew, dust mites, and mold. You'll get less condensation on the windows, and fewer bad odors. And your HVAC unit will thank you, because it can operate more efficiently on drier air.

How to Choose a Dehumidifier for a Small Apartment
But you do need to get the right dehumidifier, so before you decide on a purchase, there are a few factors you need to think about.
Choose the right capacity dehumidifier. A small apartment can use a small capacity dehumidifier, but if you have a 2,000 sq ft apartment you'll need a 20 pint or larger dehumidifier. Alternatively, you could get one smaller dehumidifier for each room (see our separate review of the top 5 small dehumidifiers).
Check the noise rating. If you have a small apartment you don't want a noisy hum coming from your dehumidifier.
If you're happy tipping out the tank every so often, fine. But particularly with the larger capacity dehumidifiers, it's a hassle. You might want one that comes with a drain hose.
If space is at a premium, then you need to think about where the dehumidifier will fit. The smallest dehumidifiers are really easy to find a place on a shelf or console table - bigger ones are usually floor-standing and can be too heavy to lift.
You'll also want to pick a good-looking dehumidifier that won't stick out like a sore thumb in your nicely designed home. Take a good look at the photos before you buy!
A dehumidifier can make your apartment both healthier and more pleasant to live in. You'll need to get the right size device for your apartment, to make sure it can cope. But once you've bought your dehumidifier and got it working, you should see humidity levels dropping in just a couple of hours.
It's worth pointing out that when the air is humid, we think it's hotter than it is. So if you live in a swampy climate, a dehumidifier may actually let you dial down your air con - saving you money - as well as making the apartment feel less muggy.
In conclusion, the best dehumidifier for apartments is the TOSOT 30 pint dehumidifier. Whether your apartment is small or large, we're confident you will be happy with this model.
